Fall 1996...

ESI Installs Remediation Systems Throughout the Midlands Region

Environmental Solutions, Inc. has installed a number of remediation systems in the past few months. ESI recently completed installation of pre-engineered soil vapor extraction and air sparging systems in southeastern Nebraska, Ames, IA, and West Des Moines, IA. Plans are being reviewed for systems in western Nebraska and Kansas as well.

Despite numerous weather delays and the extreme difficulty of the excavation. ESI completed the southeastern Nebraska project well ahead of schedule. Most of the difficulty focused on the sheer number and complexity of the utility lines that crossed the project area. ESI was also required to work around a live gas main and a number of operations electric, phone, and water lines. ESI excavated approximately 1,500 linear feet of two X four foot trench and bored 60’ under a road to install 12: casing for the soil vapor extraction and air sparging piping. Twenty-three well vaults and more than 2,000 linear feet of two-inch and four-inch schedule 40 PVC pipe was installed. ESI also poured the concrete pad and set the prefabricated building that houses the equipment and control panel. The last step was to connect it all and start the system.

The weather was more cooperative in Ames, IA, allowing that project to be completed in just 10 days. Once again, a multitude of utilities and existing pipes were crossing the project area. ESI excavated, backfilled, and performed all the subgrade preparation necessary for this system. After installing 2,940 linear feet of piping, ESI conducted pressure tests to insure no leaks were in the piping. Thirty-two well vaults were set and compacted and a concrete pad was poured for the new pump building. Others on this project handled the startup.

Over 5,000 linear feet of piping was installed for Remediation Systems throughout the Midlands.

In West Des Moines, ESI once again excavated, installed piping and set well vaults, along with retrofitting seven existing monitor wells to soil vapor extraction wells. Five new soil vapor piezometers were also installed. On this project, ESI was responsible not only for installing the prefabricated building, but also for the pumps, blowers, and associated electrical equipment inside the building. The final task was to provide assistance in the complete system startup.

ESI, the engineering consultants, and the customers are extremely pleased with the outcome these projects. To date, these systems have performed exactly as designed.

Spill Response Team Cleans Up Trailers

ESI responded to a local shipping terminal for a known spilled hazardous material. The spill was caused by a shift in the load during transportation, and was confined to the front of the trailer. ESI removed the entire contents of the shipment and inspected the contents for damage. The damaged cartons were overpacked, and the trailer was cleaned decontaminated before it was reloaded. The trailer was ready for service and back on the road the next day. ESI completed the clean-up in less than six hours.
