Fall/Winter 97-98... Diesel Tank Restoration Haz Mat Technicians, from left, Scott Janssen, Mike Norman, and Kirk Proplesch prepare for entry into diesel tank.
Hartington, Nebraska was the site of the latest diesel tank restoration project for ESI. The owner of the fuel facility received a contaminated shipment of diesel fuel which caused a sediment to accumulate at the bottom of three fuel storage tanks. The sediment had to be removed so that the tanks could operate at optimum capacity, and efficiency. The cleaning had to be done from inside the tank. The Hartington, Nebraska fuel storage tanks, two horizontal and one vertical, had approximately three inches of sediment at the bottom of each. Once the site was completely evaluated by HAZMAT Coordinator John Sempeck, a Confined Space Entry Permit and Health and Safety Site Plan were completed. After thorough review of the Permit and Safety Plan by the entire team, work began. ESI HAZMAT Technicians Mike Norman, Scott Janssen, Dave Hester, and Kirk Proplesch utilized confined space entry equipment and air monitoring instruments during the entire operation. Technicians wore EPA level B, PPE and used hard line supplied air to maximize working time within the tanks. The inside of the tanks were power washed to separate the sediment from the tank. After separation the entire contents were removed from the tanks using the ESI Dominator Vacuum Truck. The entire operation was efficiently completed in approximately five hours.
