Nebraska U.S.T. Program Update

The Nebraska Underground Storage Tank (U.S.T.) Program, created in part by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) was started in 1986. Guidelines show that all U.S.T.s in Nebraska need to be replaced, updated or removed by December 22, 1998. Any new tanks installed need to meet specific design standards set forth by the State. Requirements for the installation of any new tanks include a corrosion protection material for the tank and piping, including release detection equipment. For more information concerning the U.S.T. Program you can contact the State Fire Marshal Office at (402) 471-2027.

HAZMAT Specialists, from left, Jim Vido and Greg Leach of Viech Training, observe trainees during HAZMAT exercises.

Recently 40 Hour OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 HAZWOPER courses were completed by new ESI personnel. Other ESI HAZMAT Technicians completed 8 Hour HAZWOPER refresher courses. Specialists from Viech Training of Edwards, California were flown to Omaha to provide the extensive training. Congratulations to our newest 40 Hour HAZMAT Technicians, Lance Goebel, William Philamalee and Avery Atkinson. ESI is proud to continue its commitment to having highly trained and certified personnel ready to work for you.

Snowstorm Requires Unusual Emergency Response

Lance Goebel operates specially equipped Case 721 Loader during residential cleanup efforts.

ESI hazmat coordinator, John Sempeck, took on an unusual emergency in November. The October 26, snowstorm left the Omaha metropolitan area with an incredible cleanup to manage. When the call went out for assistance in the cleanup effort, ESI responded, and Sempeck took the lead.

ESI employees worked in conjunction with Heimes Excavating, Inc., and its employees, in order to utilize special equipment not normally required for other environmental emergency responses. Special equipment included a Case 721 Rubber Tire Loader equipped with claw type tines above the bucket, and a Takeuchi excavator with a special hydraulic clamp arm installed by Heimes’ Shop Manager, Mark Smith. This type of equipment, combined with tandem axle dump trucks, and side dump tractor trailers, were needed to help clean up the damage.

ESI and Heimes Excavating, Inc worked with both Omaha and Council Bluffs officials during the operation. After an outside contractor, D&J Enterprises, was hired to take over the residential cleanup effort, our equipment and manpower were reassigned to the drop-off locations. There, our focus was loading grinders and hauling off the mountains of mulch the grinders generated.

Even during the huge project ESI continued to handle other emergency response operations. Employees were shifted around and switched out in order to keep the specially trained personnel available for other types of emergencies. ESI is very proud of the ability of our employees to handle even the most unusual environmental emergencies.
