From the Desk of: John Smith Environmental & Safety Training Manager Nebraska Safety Council 1996 EPA Enforcement Data Released The Environmental Protection Agency has released the 1996 Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Accomplishment Report, which summarizes activities on the enforcement side of the EPA. A summary of the 1996 activities includes the following data. • Under State Environmental Agencies Judicial Referrals and Administrative Actions for the year 1996, a total of 9,306 cases were referred for further investigation. • Under the Judicial Referrals there were a total of 433 cases referred to the Department of Justice for further summary or prosecution activities. • The Total Dollar value of the 1996 EPA Enforcement Actions resulted in the following values:
The Environmental Criminal Enforcement in 1996 resulted in 262 referrals to the Department of Justice were forwarded, and out of those referrals, 221 defendants were charged and convicted, resulting in 1,116 months of sentencing.
